Joyce James: Trailblazer with Her Mother’s Heart
You could say Joyce James was born to be a social worker. Her first example of what is now known as “kinship care” was in her own family. Her mother took in and raised her cousin, who was born prematurely, to help her aunt. “My mother was my first role model of a social worker,” James shares. “Even without a formal education, she was always helping others.”

The Austin Police Department continues to nurture an equitable and inclusive environment for both sworn and civilian staff with Groundwater Analysis of Racial Inequities. Facilitated by Joyce James Consulting, this racial equity training for staff at all levels includes a focus on understanding institutional and structural racism.

For the Black Mamas Community Collective Show Up for Black Mothers Initiative, Joyce James Consulting’s contractual work included professional development training as strategies to create more culturally responsive systems that improve the maternal health outcomes for Black mothers.
Training for Child Advocates
In child abuse cases in Marion County, both the parents and the State of Indiana are represented by legal counsel. There was a time when the children had no one to represent them. That changed in 1982 with the creation of Child Advocates.
Black Mamas ATX
The Black Mamas Community Collective partners with Joyce James LMSW-AP, to provide the Groundwater Analysis Training. This training focuses on systemic rather than individual factors that inhibit institutions and systems from achieving racial equity.

Joyce James is an advisory board member and consultant with the Black Bodies Project. This nonprofit uses multimedia tools to help people better understand how racism impacts us all.

Joyce James co-authored the Racial Equity in Mobile Innovation Case Study (December 2020) sponsored by the City of Austin and Ford Mobility.
Anti-Racist Alliance
Undoing structural racism in our lifetime! Joyce James teamed up with the Anti-Racist Alliance and Child Protective Services staff to present a workshop on undoing racism within the Texas Child Welfare system.
